Contrary to some theories that have emerged on the Internet, Greta it is not based on any true story, although it is inspired by some kidnapping cases. This is because, from a certain point on, the film increasingly acquires the connotations of a psychological thriller starting from the moment in which Greta kidnaps Frances. This is explained by the madness of the woman, disturbed by the suicide of her daughter which took place years before her and now looking for a replacement for her to be able to mother. Frances, who recently lost her parent, turns out to be the perfect prey for her. After having kidnapped her, she therefore leads her to an isolated villa, where she begins to give her piano lessons and various maternal teachings in general.

However, the disappearance of the young woman does not go unnoticed and soon both her father and her roommate and friend Erica will start looking for her. It will be the latter who finds her, managing to free her using a ruse thanks to which she temporarily manages to drug Greta. Before leaving the house, the two girls lock her in a trunk. The last image of the film, however, shows us the bolt of this starting to move, suggesting that Greta will be able to get rid of her to return to the attack against Frances.
