After freeing the Black Pearl from the terrible spell of the Aztec chest, Jack Sparrow receives a visit from ‘Spitfire’ Bill Turner that, commissioned by the damned David Jones, invites him to honor the pact made thirteen years earlier and to join the crew of the Flying Dutchman, if he does not want to be persecuted by the Kraken. The only way to avert this situation is to stab Jones’ heart, contained in his ghost chest. Only in this way can the pirate be killed together with his curse. To succeed in the enterprise, however, Sparrow will need again Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and a whole new crew. In addition to Jones, however, the new Commodore, the ruthless, will also stand against them Lord Beckett.
In the role of Jack Sparrow naturally finds himself Johnny Depp, who plays the same character on more than one occasion for the first time. Loving this role very much, Depp has in fact agreed to act in the sequel without getting lost twice, contributing again to the character’s aesthetic and characterization. Keira Knightley, who has become a worldwide star following the success of the first film, also returns as Elizabeth Swann. The actress, however, agreed to participate in the sequel on one condition: being able to kiss Johnny Depp in a movie scene. Orlando Bloom in turn he reprises the role of Will Turner here.
The actor Bill Nighy instead, he enters the saga as Davy Jones, the most beloved villain of the saga. To portray him on set, Nighy wore a motion capture suit and dots on his face to provide guidance for the character’s CGI build. Several actors later admitted that it was often difficult to play against Nighy wearing the suit and the dots on his face without bursting into laughter. Jones’s crew is remembered in particular Stellan Skarsgard as “Sputafuoco” Bill Turner, a character for which the actor had to undergo four hours of makeup. Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest: the ships, the locations and the special effects of the film
Once again, of course, the big stars of the film are the pirate ships. The iconic Black Pearl was created starting from a real ship that bears the name of Sunset, while theFlying Dutchman it measures 50 meters in length and weighs 420 tons. For its creation, the employees were inspired by the Vasa, a huge Swedish warship now housed in Stockholm’s Vasa museum. As for film locations, once again the production made use of Jalisco (Mexico) e Barrouallie (Saint Vincent), as well as some Bahamas. The island chosen by Gore Verbinski to make all the scenes on land is called instead Sundayand is located between the French islands.
Of particular importance was the work done on the special effects. Most of the effort was required for the creation of the character Devy Jones and his crew (for which some preparatory drawings were made by Tim Burton) but also for that of the fearsome Kraken. To create the scenes with the latter (for the first time entirely produced in computer graphics), each shot took months to create. Davy Jones, on the other hand, was originally designed with chin growths, but the designers later opted for full-blown tentacles.
