The protagonist of the film is the doctor JoAnne Thornton, an avid meteorologist, tornado hunter. Back in 1969, at the age of 5, the woman found herself living a terrifying experience: a devastating category F5 tornado suddenly swept over the farm where she lived with her family, destroying the door of the shelter they had managed to everyone taking cover and dragging their father away with them. The instrument is the result of an ingenious project by Jo’s ex-husband, Bill Harding, now employed as a meteorologist at a television station. Jo, along with the whole team, is traveling with his off-road vehicle, looking for the perfect tornado to test the new machine. With her there is also Bill, who intends to formalize the divorce papers. Soon the group will have to deal with the force of nature, which has no mercy for anyone.

Twisters: the cast of the film

For this film, director Jan de Bont did not want to work with well-known actors due to their notoriously demanding nature, preferring lesser-known actors so as not to distract attention from the tornadoes. For the role of JoAnne Thornton he had the actress in mind Helen Hunt, as he loved her strong personality and ability to boss people around, which reminded him of a tornado. However, the studio was puzzled by that choice, since Hunt was only known for making television sitcoms. After meeting other actresses, however, the director continued to consider Hunt the only possible candidate, to whom he was finally able to offer her role.

Tom Hanks was the initial choice for the role of Bill Harding. Hanks also read lines with the cast and even picked out the character’s wardrobe, only to drop out of the project because he felt it wasn’t what he wanted to do at the time in his career. While on the set of Apollo 13 (1995), Hanks felt that his co-star Bill Paxton was perfect for the part of Bill Harding in this movie and helped land him the role.
